Services & Fees

Although I’m now officially retired from chess teaching and working mostly on writing books, articles and reviews, I can still take on coaching projects of particular interest if I think I’m the right person for the job.

I can offer individual and small group coaching within the Twickenham area.

Private lessons take place preferably at my house (Whitton) but I can also travel very locally.

If you’re looking for someone to entertain a 5-year-old, to be honest they’d probably be better off playing simpler strategy games and moving onto chess when they’re mature enough to take an adult approach.

If you’re looking for someone who will help your children become chess champions, I may not be the right teacher for you.

But if you’re looking for a mentor, a training partner or just a friend, especially for children who might find it hard fitting in elsewhere, I might be able to help you.

Current fees: £30/hour or part hour coaching plus £10/hour or part hour travelling time.

I’m prepared to run groups for free as long as children are genuinely interested and, for children of primary school age, parents are proactively involved in the learning process.

I can also provide a game annotation service, combining computer analysis with helpful advice and suggestions. Fees: £20/hour of my time. Do bear in mind that short and simple games won’t take me long to analyse, but long and complex games may take me an hour or more.

I can also meet up for informal games and lessons at the new chess table on Heathfield Recreation Ground, Powder Mill Lane, Whitton.
